PLASTIC BAG FREE DAY HELD - 28th FEBRUARY 2009 - ROMSEY

  • On Saturday the 28th February we had a most successful Plastic Bag Free Day in Romsey. The local businesses were very supportive in not giving out plastic bags and we handed out hundreds of fairly traded organic cotton Better Bags for Romsey. A local Primary school choir sang a "plastic bag free" song, which the Norwich Bag Ladies Choir let us use.

We gave out bags in the Town Centre, in the local Supermarket and in the Town Hall where there were also lots of activities and displays. These included Fair Trade, Oxfam, Test Valley Borough Council Recycling, Waitrose, the Environment Centre and Vandanamu, who make our bags. There was a Design and Paint a bag stall and also one making bags from material remnants, which the Romsey Mayor and the Test Valley Mayor tried, as did our local MP. We had a free raffle for those willing to sign a pledge to reduce their plastic use. The prizes, donated by Test Valley Recycling were a wind up radio, a compost bin and recycling goody bags.

It was impressive how many shoppers had remembered to bring their own bags, and how many positive reactions we had to the day. Many retailers now sell alternative bags and most ask before handing out a plastic bag. We have been very pleased with the success of the campaign and would like to thank everyone for their support.
