Some Background :
-
the dawn of the plastic era when we first started using plastic for consumer packaging on a mass scale, was in the 1950’s.
-
rather than biodegrading, plastics ‘photo degrade’ into smaller and smaller toxic pieces. They contaminate the soil, waterways, and oceans, and enter the food web, when they are ingested by animals.
-
scientists estimate that most plastic items will last in the environment for anywhere between 15 and 1000 years. This means that, since the 1950’s, most pieces of plastic ever made, used and thrown away, will still be here on the planet, whether in homes, landfill or the environment.
-
the production of plastic bags requires petroleum and often natural gas, both non-renewable resources, that increase our dependency on foreign suppliers. The toxic chemical ingredients used to make plastic produces pollution during the manufacturing process; and, the energy needed for manufacture and transport uses more resources, and creates global warming emissions.
